Go Wild Adventure Kayaking – Our culture & history

Te Arawa katoa mai I Maketu ki Tongariro
(the bow of Te Arawa rests at Maketu and the stern at Tongariro)

This proverb describes the tribal area of the Te Arawa people.

Many many years ago, the great leader Houmaitawhiti sent his people from their home land of Hawaiki, by canoe (waka), to follow stars and ocean currents to the South West Pacific.

Under their great Captain Tamatekapua, (Eldest son of Houmaitawhiti) and with the tohunga (Master) Ngatoroirangi as his navigator, the Waka was landed at Maketu, in the Bay of Plenty. Its people spread forth and settled from Maketu all the way to Tongariro.

Ihenga, was the grandson of Tamatekapua; he discovered and named much of the Rotorua lakes region

Ngatoroirangi travelled on and explored the Central Plateau.

Four generations later Rangitihi, a great chief, became known for his leadership and bravery as a warrior in battle. His eight children and their descendents formed the tribes of the Rotorua region and became known as

“Nga pu Manawa e waru o Te Arawa” – “The eight beating hearts of Te Arawa”

We are privileged, and honoured, to be able to share this wonderland with you. We are grateful for the foresight of our tipuna (ancestors) who preserved it as much as possible for our generation, and those to come.

We honour, and respect our whenua (land), and are committed to our role as ‘kaitiaki’ (guardians) of the land for future generations.

Ko au te whenua, te whenua ko au

I am the land, the land is me.
